The road to happiness

The road to finding happiness is well-trodden and one that many of us find ourselves on at some point in our lives. Whether it is a change in job, relationship or other life factors that cause us to search for answers, the question “how can I be happier?” is one we often ask ourselves.

Science has the answer

We are lucky to have so much science and research to help us to answer this question. This week we are taking a closer look at one of the key factors that lead to happiness. We’ll be referencing the research-backed PERMA model here which, looks at the proven factors that contribute to our happiness If you missed these episodes, you can read more about this model and the first factor ‘P’ in the 2 blog posts below:

So, let’s look at the second part of the PERMA model – ‘E’ which stands for Engagement. Engagement is defined as activities that cause us to lose track of time or that help us to be in a total state of flow. These activities are generally things that we are really passionate about and may include reading, writing, listening to music… the list is endless…

When we have engagement in our lives we are happier! The reason for this is that when we are fully engaged in activities, dopamine gets released in our brain. Dopamine is the feel-good hormone and makes us feel great. Dopamine also counteracts the stress hormone cortisol so it really is a win-win!
